How to backup your photos with Google Photos

If you have kids or animals, you've probably taken a billion or more pictures with your fancy DSLR camera, your smartphone camera, or a combination of the two. There's probably a Texas-sized photo library sitting on your hard drive.

If you were smart, you probably spent the weekend backing up your photo library to DVD or some other media and then you took all those discs to your security deposit box at the bank for safekeeping. 

If you don't spend 20 hours backing up your photo library, you may want to learn about the latest developments known as Google Photos. Google has decided to provide unlimited photo storage for everyone (with some caution) in their infinite generosity. The good news is that it's easy to use and you can not only back up photos from your computer but you also have it on your smartphone and / or tablet. 

This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t back up your photos to physical media, but it is a great secondary storage method for backing up your photos regularly and maybe many of your “regular” methods can be used now every other year.

Back up photos from your mobile device to Google Photos.

You must first download the Google Photos app for your iOS or Android device. 

Once the app is downloaded and installed, do the following. For iOS-based devices Open the Google Photos iOS application on your mobile device. In the upper left corner of the application, press the screen button with 3 horizontal lines. Choose settings. Select the Backup and Sync option. Select the ON location.

At this time, you may be prompted by the application to allow access to your photos and videos for backup purposes. Switch to the iOS Settings app (gear icon), go to Privacy> Photos and turn Google Photos into Position. 

For Android-based devices Open the Google Photos Android app on your mobile device

In the upper left corner of the application, press the screen button with 3 horizontal lines. 

Choose settings. Select the Backup and Sync option. Select the ON location. Backing up photos to Google Photos on your computer (Win or Mac) Go to https://photos.google.com/apps from your computer's web browser Choose the Mac OS X installer or Windows installer when requested.

Download the Google Desktop Photo Uploader application for your type of computer. Open the installer and follow the onscreen setup instructions. Launch the Google Photos Desktop Uploader application Follow the on-screen instructions.
